  86. File Manager StepUp (or FM StepUp) is a utility that improves File
  87. Manager dramatically.  Instead of replacing File Manager, FM StepUp
  88. simply makes it better.  When you install FMStepUp, additional
  89. commands are added to the menus of the File Manager, and existing
  90. commands are enhanced.

  175. which you can "try before you buy".

  177. You may install the program in your system and use it for an
  178. evaluation period of up to 14 days.  After that time, you are
  179. required to purchase a license for continued use of the software or
  180. else stop using it.  You may freely copy and distribute evaluation
  181. copies of FM StepUp provided that all conditions specified in the
  182. distribution license are satisfied (please see the license agreement

  185. What's the difference between Evaluation and Licensed versions?
  186.  
  187. There is NO functional difference between the evaluation and
  188. licensed versions of this software (except for the 'registration
  189. reminders', displayed by the evaluation version).  Actually, it's
  190. the same program: you may convert an evaluation copy to a registered
  191. copy by entering your name and a registration code into the system.
  192. Similarly, a registered copy of the program may be 'unregistered' by
  193. deleting the registration code or by just copying the program to
  194. another machine.

  197. make them this way so you can have a real look at them to decide

  231. How to purchase a license for continued use of FM StepUp

  234. ChaoSoft licenses the software on the 'per-user', not a
  235. 'per-computer' basis.  This means that you may purchase a single
  236. individual license and use FM StepUp on more than one computer (for
  237. example, a desktop system and a notebook), provided that you are the
  238. only user of those computers and there is no possibility to use the
  239. Registered Copy by anybody else.
  240.  
  241. On the other hand, if more than one person uses a computer, every
  242. such user must purchase an individual license for continued use of
  243. the software, or a site license for the total number of users
  244. accessing the computer must be obtained.

  266. 1.4. Notes on using FM StepUp under Windows 95
  267. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  268.  
  269. If you are using Windows 95, you may find many features of FM StepUp
  270. in Explorer (right-button menus, history lists in dialog boxes,
  271. Quick View facility, etc.) However, you may still find the *old*
  272. File Manager, enhanced with FM StepUp, to be a good addition to your
  273. arcenal of file management tools.
  274.  
  275. Here is a short list of advantages of using File Manager with FM StepUp:
  276.  
  277. - File Manager runs *much* faster than Explorer;
  278.  
  279. - File Manager is a MDI (Multiple Document Interface) application,
  280.   that provides easy access to different directories at the same
  281.   time;
  282.   
  283. - FM StepUp provides a number of features absent in Explorer, like
  284.   special commands 'Total SIze', 'Run Screen Saver', and
  285.   customizable 'Execute' menu.
  286.   
  287. File Manager is not made available automatically when you install
  288. Windows 95, however you can easily add it to your desktop - just
  289. create a new shortcut and specify 'WINFILE.EXE' as its command line.
  290.  
  291. Of course, please keep in mind that FM StepUp was designed to be
  292. used under Windows 3.1/3.11, so some of its features may become
  293. useless or not functioning under Windows 95. Among them:
  294.  
  295. - No long file name support.  This is no fault of ours, it's a
  296.   limitation of 16-bit File Manager, included with Windows 95.  Had
  297.   Microsoft decide to include a 32-bit version of File Manager
  298.   (available with Windows NT) in the file set of Windows 95, you
  299.   would get long file names 'for free', but...
  300.  
  301. - Some DOS commands (TREE, etc.  ) are not updated by Microsoft to
  302.   be used under Windows 95, so they are not available for use in the
  303.   'Execute' menu.
  304.  
  305. We also offer a separate product, StepUp'96, designed specifically
  306. to improve the user interface of Windows 95.  Please see file
  307. ORDER.TXT for the description and ordering information.

  311. //      2.  INSTALLING File Manager StepUp
  312. //

  315. Unlike most other Windows applications, FM StepUp is not a stand-
  316. alone program; there is no special executable file you would run to
  317. start FM StepUp.  To use the program, all you need is to properly
  318. install it and, every time your run File Manager, FM StepUp will run
  319. automatically.
  320.  
  321. 2.1. Using Setup utility
  322. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  323.  
  324. FM StepUp comes with a convenient and flexible SETUP utility.  Use
  325. SETUP when you want to temporarily activate/deactivate the software
  326. or install it onto your hard disk or network drive for permanent
  327. use.
  328.  
  329. 2.1.1. HOW TO QUICKLY TRY OUT THE SOFTWARE
  330. ------------------------------------------
  331.  
  332. If you obtained FM StepUp on a diskette or CD-ROM and want to take a
  333. look at the utility without installing it onto your hard disk, run
  334. SETUP.EXE from the FMSTEPUP directory on the diskette or CD-ROM and
  335. choose the 'Activate' button when prompted.
  336.  
  337.   - to run SETUP.EXE, choose File | Run from main menu of Program 
  338.     Manager or File Manager and type into the 'Run' dialog box:  
  339.  
  340.         A:\FMSTEPUP\SETUP.EXE
  341.  
  342.     (assuming that the diskette is inserted into the 'A' floppy 
  343.     drive) 
  344.  
  345. After that, run File Manager.  You should see a new entry in the
  346. main menu, 'StepUp' (Note: If there is no such entry, FM StepUp has
  347. not been activated; see information below for possible reasons.) Of
  348. course, be sure that the diskette or CD with FM StepUp is available
  349. while File Manager is loading!
  350.  
  351. Try this:
  352.  
  353. - place the mouse cursor in a File Manager window and click with 
  354.   the right button.  The Quick Menu should pop up with a number of 
  355.   choices; try some of them.  
  356.  
  357. - open 'StepUp' submenu and choose 'Special'; try commands from it;
  358.  
  359. - open standard dialog boxes of the File Manager: e.g., Run, Copy, 
  360.   Move,  etc.  Don't they look better with 3-D effects?  Are the 
  361.   history lists next to the editable fields handy?
  362.  
  363. - choose StepUp | Preferences: what do you want to customize?  Try 
  364.   buttons: Dialogs; Quick Menu; Execute Menu; try to change the 
  365.   menu name 'StepUp' to something else.  
  366.  
  367. Now, if you see that FM StepUp is not what you need, run SETUP.EXE
  368. and choose the 'Deactivate' button.  In addition, to completely
  369. clean your system, you should delete the FMSTEPUP.INI file from your
  370. WINDOWS directory.
  371.  
  372. On the other hand, if you want to give the program a longer trial
  373. and wish to install it onto your hard disk or network drive, choose
  374. the 'Install' button when SETUP.EXE prompts you.  Please see the
  375. next section for more information.
  376.  
  377. 2.1.2. Installing on a hard disk or network drive
  378. -------------------------------------------------
  379.  
  380. If you've already copied all files from the FM StepUp package onto
  381. your hard disk (for instance, you have extracted the files from an
  382. archive), run SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Activate' button.
  383.  
  384. If you don't have the FM StepUp files on the hard disk, choose
  385. 'Install' instead.  Then enter the path to the directory where you
  386. want FM StepUp to be installed.  In this case, SETUP.EXE will copy
  387. all the files to the new location and then activate them.  In
  388. addition, you'll be prompted to create a separate program group for
  389. FM StepUp.  It isn't essential to have such a group, but it may be
  390. convenient.  In any case, it's your decision!
  391.  
  392. 2.1.3. Uninstalling FM StepUp
  393. -----------------------------
  394.  
  395. To prevent File Manager from loading and using FM StepUp, run
  396. SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Deactivate' button.  If you decide to
  397. start using FM StepUp later on, run SETUP.EXE and choose 'Activate'.
  398.  
  399. Otherwise, to completely remove FM StepUp from your system,
  400. deactivate it with the SETUP.EXE utility (see above) and remove all
  401. the files from the directory on your hard disk or network drive
  402. where you have installed FM StepUp.  In addition, erase file
  403. FMSTEPUP.INI from your WINDOWS directory and, if you created it
  404. during installation, delete the 'FMStepUp' program group from the
  405. Program Manager.
  406.  
  407. 2.2. Registering your copy of FM StepUp
  408. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  409. Sometimes, FM StepUp displays a registration reminder, and the
  410. 'About FM StepUp' screen reads 'Unregistered copy.' If you have
  411. registered FM StepUp and obtained your personal Registration Code
  412. from us, you may use it to remove the registration reminder from the
  413. screen and enter your name in the 'About FM StepUp' screen.  Choose
  414. 'Register' from the StepUp menu of File Manager and, when the dialog
  415. box pops up, enter your name (exactly as it appears in your
  416. Registration Acknowledgment) and the Registration Code.
  417.  
  418. Be sure to enter your name EXACTLY as it's written in the
  419. Registration Acknowledgment, including all letters in proper case
  420. (upper or lower), spaces, punctuation, etc.  If you wish your name
  421. to be spelled differently, please let us know and we'll assign you a
  422. new registration number.
  423.  
  424. 2.3. Manual installation/deinstallation
  425. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  426. If the automatic installation fails for any reason, you may install
  427. FM StepUp manually:
  428.  
  429. 1.  Create a directory for FM StepUp on your hard disk, say
  430.     C:\FMSTEPUP, and copy all the files from the FM StepUp
  431.     installation disk into that directory.  If you obtained the FM
  432.     StepUp files compressed in an archive, extract all the files
  433.     from it.
  434.  
  435. 2.  Close File Manager.
  436.  
  437. 3.  Open file WINFILE.INI for editing (using Notepad or any other
  438.     ASCII text editor).  This file is located in the WINDOWS
  439.     directory on your hard disk (or the directory you specified when
  440.     installing Windows).  Please note: The file you need is
  441.     WINFILE.INI, not the WIN.INI file!
  442.  
  443.     Find the section [AddOns] in this file and enter the following 
  444.     line right after the string [AddOns]:
  445.  
  446.         FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
  447.  
  448.     (or specify the directory you copied FM StepUp's files into, 
  449.     if other than FMSTEPUP).
  450.  
  451.     The resulting portion of the WINFILE.INI should look like 
  452.     this:
  453.  
  454.         ...
  455.         [AddOns]
  456.         FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
  457.         ...
  458.  
  459.     (... means other lines of the file).  Save the file.  
  460.  
  461. 5.  Run File Manager.
  462.  
  463. If the installation has been completed successfully, you should see
  464. a new menu item, 'StepUp,' among the other items in the main menu of
  465. the File Manager.  If you don't see the 'StepUp' entry in the main
  466. menu of File Manager, an error has occurred.  Please verify that you
  467. have done all the steps above and, in particular, you specified the
  468. correct path in the [AddOns] section of the WINFILE.INI file.  Also,
  469. make sure that the files have not been corrupted when they were
  470. copied onto your hard disk.  (Each file should be the same size as
  471. each file on the installation diskette)
  472.  
  473. To manually uninstall FM StepUp:
  474.  
  475. 1.  Close File Manager and remove the line 'FM StepUp=...' from the
  476.     WINFILE.INI file (using Notepad, for example).  After that, when
  477.     you restart File Manager, FM StepUp will not be loaded.  If you
  478.     decide later to start using FM StepUp again, enter the line
  479.     'FMStepUp=...' specifying the complete DOS path to FMSTEPUP.DLL
  480.     file, in the [AddOn] section of the WINFILE.INI file.
  481.  
  482. The following steps should be completed only if you wish to remove
  483. FM StepUp from your system permanently:
  484.  
  485. 2.  Delete all the files from the directory on your hard disk where
  486.     you installed FM StepUp;
  487.  
  488. 3.  Delete file FMSTEPUP.INI from the WINDOWS directory; 
  489.  
  490. 4.  Delete program group 'FMStepUp' in the Program manager window, 
  491.     if there is one.  
  492.  
  493. We hope you'll change your mind!  
  494.  
  495. 2.3. A note about [Restrictions] for File Manager
  496. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  497. If you're a System Administrator, you may find that FM StepUp gives
  498. too much power to Windows users.  That's why we made FM StepUp able
  499. to restrict itself.  With FM StepUp, you may also restrict a user's
  500. access to some of the features of the File Manager in the same way
  501. as Program Manager.
  502.  
  503.   NOTE: FM StepUp is not intended to provide a comprehensive set of
  504.   [Restrictions] for File Manager.  A separate utility, 'FM Guard,'
  505.   specifically designed for this purpose, is available from
  506.   ChaoSoft.  'FM Guard' allows you to disable any command in File
  507.   Manager, limit user access to any drive of your choice, prevent
  508.   closing of File Manager, etc.  For more information about 'FM
  509.   Guard,' please contact us at the address at the end of this file.
  510.  
  511. To restrict FM StepUp, create a file, 'FMSTEPUP.SYS' in the
  512. WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, insert a [Restrictions] section in the
  513. file and add desired Boolean entries listed below to it.
  514.  
  515.       Standard rules for specifying BOOLEAN entries of the WIN.INI
  516.       and SYSTEM.INI files apply here: 1/ON/TRUE/YES may be used
  517.       interchangeably to turn the mode on; 0/OFF/FALSE/NO - to turn
  518.       it off.
  519.  
  520.       Note: the settings that affect standard dialog boxes (By File
  521.       Type, Properties, Run, etc.) of File Manager require
  522.       corresponding dialog boxes to be enabled through the
  523.       'Preferences | Dialogs' command.
  524.  
  525. NoShowHiddenSysFiles=BOOLEAN
  526.   disables the Show Hidden/System Files check box in the By File 
  527.   Type dialog box so that users will be unable to see any files 
  528.   you don't want them to; 
  529.  
  530. NoChangeFileAttrib=BOOLEAN  
  531.   disables the Attributes group of the Properties dialog box and 
  532.   prevents users from changing attributes of files, so that all 
  533.   the files made hidden by you will remain hidden; 
  534.  
  535. NoChangeFileDateTime=BOOLEAN  
  536.   disables OK button in the Change Date/Time dialog and prevents 
  537.   users from modifying these file attributes; 
  538.  
  539. NoUninstallStepUp=BOOLEAN  
  540.   prevents users from uninstalling FM StepUp, i.e. if a user 
  541.   modifies the WINFILE.INI and removes the 'FM StepUp=' entry, this
  542.   entry will be added again by FM StepUp automatically when 
  543.   exiting File Manager and FM StepUp will be loaded during the 
  544.   next run of File Manager.
  545.  
  546. NoSaveStepUpSettings=BOOLEAN  
  547.   prevents users from saving the current settings of FM StepUp 
  548.   on exit or on choosing File | Exit while the holding SHIFT key 
  549.   down (undocumented 'Save Settings Now' command); 
  550.  
  551. NoCustomizeExecMenu=BOOLEAN
