1.1 About File Manager StepUp
------------------------------
File Manager StepUp (or FM StepUp) is a utility that improves File
Manager dramatically. Instead of replacing File Manager, FM StepUp
simply makes it better. When you install FMStepUp, additional
commands are added to the menus of the File Manager, and existing
commands are enhanced.
Featured in the January 1995, WINDOWS Magazine, Superior Shareware
section and rated FIVE STARS by Ziff-Davis Interactive!
"ChaoSoft accomplishes what Microsoft couldn't ... an excellent
shareware product that enhances the power and usefulness of
Windows' [File Manager] ..." - Scott A. May, Columbia Daily
Tribune, 10/94
"FM StepUp ... does all manner of clever things... FM StepUp is
certainly good enough to try." - Mike Hardaker, Windows User UK,
06/94
"Once you have started using it you'll never want to give it up!"
- Matt McLeod, Australian PC User, 06/94
"File Manager StepUp ... is chock full of excellent features.
It easily rates among the best available FM add-ins..." - Steven
J.Cohen, WinOnLine Review, 2/95
Here is the list of features File Manager gets with FM StepUp:
o Enhanced dialog boxes, including history lists, browse
buttons, verify check boxes, etc.
o Commands to easily create, view, edit or print arbitrary
files, not necessarily associated with an application.
o Customizable Execute Menu, that provides an easy way to
access frequently used applications and perform
pre-programmed operations on currently selected files.
o Customizable Quick Menu, instantly accessible with the right
mouse button, contains the most frequently used commands and
keeps track of the execution history of other commands.
o Several special commands are provided to make you more
productive:
1. Total Size, allows you to figure out the size of a
directory, including all subdirectories;
2. Change Date/Time, allows you to change date or time
attributes for a file;
3. Run Screen Saver;
4. Return To DOS; Restart Windows; Reboot System, etc.
o Complete context-sensitive Help is available from all
dialog boxes. The Help file provides a complete user's
guide for FM StepUp.
o FM StepUp is highly customizable. A user can control virtually
every aspect of FM StepUp, from choosing a name for its menu
to specifying which dialog boxes to enhance.
Try it - You won't believe how you were able to work without FM
StepUp.
"The way software should be!"(tm)
1.2. What's new in this version:
----------------------------------
- functionality of the Quick Menu has been enhanced: right-click on an
item automatically selects it before displaing the Quick Menu. This
behavior is consistant with the Windows 95 user interface.
- bugs fixed:
- "Right-click within a File Manager window deselects multiple
selection"
- "The Execute Menu gets corrupted after it was modified and the
Windows session had been ended while File Manager was running".
- "The 'Total size' command fails to work if a directory on a
networked drive has been selected in the 'left' pane of a window".
1.3. This is "TRY BEFORE YOU BUY" software!
--------------------------------------------
This is NOT freeware or public domain software. This is software
which you can "try before you buy".
You may install the program in your system and use it for an
evaluation period of up to 14 days. After that time, you are
required to purchase a license for continued use of the software or
else stop using it. You may freely copy and distribute evaluation
copies of FM StepUp provided that all conditions specified in the
distribution license are satisfied (please see the license agreement
in the VENDINFO.DIZ file.)
What's the difference between Evaluation and Licensed versions?
There is NO functional difference between the evaluation and
licensed versions of this software (except for the 'registration
reminders', displayed by the evaluation version). Actually, it's
the same program: you may convert an evaluation copy to a registered
copy by entering your name and a registration code into the system.
Similarly, a registered copy of the program may be 'unregistered' by
deleting the registration code or by just copying the program to
another machine.
Evaluation copies of our products are 100% fully functional. We
make them this way so you can have a real look at them to decide
whether or not they fit your needs. Please understand that if you
fail to register, and continue to use 'FM StepUp' beyond the eval-
uation period without paying for it, don't expect the program to
maintain its original functionality: some features may become
disabled. If you need more time to decide whether you want to keep
the program, we'll give you an opportunity to extend the evaluation
period. However, we cannot afford to let you use the program
without compensation. In addition, it is unfair to our customers
who do register to use the program. We appreciate your
understanding of this policy.
What do you get when you purchase a license for FM StepUp?
1. A unique Registration Code, allowing you to remove the
registration reminders and put your name, or the name of your
organization, on the 'About FM StepUp' screen.
2. Disk with the latest version of FM StepUp and other ChaoSoft
products.
3. The privilege to upgrade to all future versions of FM StepUp
for Windows 3.1/3.11 FREE of charge.
4. FREE 90-day customer support through electronic mail.
5. FREE Compuserve membership with a $15.00 usage credit. This is
much more than enough online time to have your technical support
questions answered, and still have some fun!
6. FREE BONUS: a 800x600x256, 3-dimensional, ray-traced *.bmp
image of ChaoSoft's logo (may be used as wallpaper on your
Windows desktop).
How to purchase a license for continued use of FM StepUp
--------------------------------------------------------
ChaoSoft licenses the software on the 'per-user', not a
'per-computer' basis. This means that you may purchase a single
individual license and use FM StepUp on more than one computer (for
example, a desktop system and a notebook), provided that you are the
only user of those computers and there is no possibility to use the
Registered Copy by anybody else.
On the other hand, if more than one person uses a computer, every
such user must purchase an individual license for continued use of
the software, or a site license for the total number of users
accessing the computer must be obtained.
Please refer to ORDER.TXT file for detailed instructions and order
forms. You may register FM StepUp with a check or money order.
Major credit cards accepted. You may also register via CompuServe.
Purchase orders from companies are accepted.
Please refer to ORDER.TXT for more information.

1.4. Notes on using FM StepUp under Windows 95
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you are using Windows 95, you may find many features of FM StepUp
in Explorer (right-button menus, history lists in dialog boxes,
Quick View facility, etc.) However, you may still find the *old*
File Manager, enhanced with FM StepUp, to be a good addition to your
arcenal of file management tools.
Here is a short list of advantages of using File Manager with FM StepUp:
- File Manager runs *much* faster than Explorer;
- File Manager is a MDI (Multiple Document Interface) application,
that provides easy access to different directories at the same
time;
- FM StepUp provides a number of features absent in Explorer, like
special commands 'Total SIze', 'Run Screen Saver', and
customizable 'Execute' menu.
File Manager is not made available automatically when you install
Windows 95, however you can easily add it to your desktop - just
create a new shortcut and specify 'WINFILE.EXE' as its command line.
Of course, please keep in mind that FM StepUp was designed to be
used under Windows 3.1/3.11, so some of its features may become
useless or not functioning under Windows 95. Among them:
- No long file name support. This is no fault of ours, it's a
limitation of 16-bit File Manager, included with Windows 95. Had
Microsoft decide to include a 32-bit version of File Manager
(available with Windows NT) in the file set of Windows 95, you
would get long file names 'for free', but...
- Some DOS commands (TREE, etc. ) are not updated by Microsoft to
be used under Windows 95, so they are not available for use in the
'Execute' menu.
We also offer a separate product, StepUp'96, designed specifically
to improve the user interface of Windows 95. Please see file
ORDER.TXT for the description and ordering information.
//
// 2. INSTALLING File Manager StepUp
//
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Unlike most other Windows applications, FM StepUp is not a stand-
alone program; there is no special executable file you would run to
start FM StepUp. To use the program, all you need is to properly
install it and, every time your run File Manager, FM StepUp will run
automatically.
2.1. Using Setup utility
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FM StepUp comes with a convenient and flexible SETUP utility. Use
SETUP when you want to temporarily activate/deactivate the software
or install it onto your hard disk or network drive for permanent
use.
2.1.1. HOW TO QUICKLY TRY OUT THE SOFTWARE
------------------------------------------
If you obtained FM StepUp on a diskette or CD-ROM and want to take a
look at the utility without installing it onto your hard disk, run
SETUP.EXE from the FMSTEPUP directory on the diskette or CD-ROM and
choose the 'Activate' button when prompted.
- to run SETUP.EXE, choose File | Run from main menu of Program
Manager or File Manager and type into the 'Run' dialog box:
A:\FMSTEPUP\SETUP.EXE
(assuming that the diskette is inserted into the 'A' floppy
drive)
After that, run File Manager. You should see a new entry in the
main menu, 'StepUp' (Note: If there is no such entry, FM StepUp has
not been activated; see information below for possible reasons.) Of
course, be sure that the diskette or CD with FM StepUp is available
while File Manager is loading!
Try this:
- place the mouse cursor in a File Manager window and click with
the right button. The Quick Menu should pop up with a number of
choices; try some of them.
- open 'StepUp' submenu and choose 'Special'; try commands from it;
- open standard dialog boxes of the File Manager: e.g., Run, Copy,
Move, etc. Don't they look better with 3-D effects? Are the
history lists next to the editable fields handy?
- choose StepUp | Preferences: what do you want to customize? Try
buttons: Dialogs; Quick Menu; Execute Menu; try to change the
menu name 'StepUp' to something else.
Now, if you see that FM StepUp is not what you need, run SETUP.EXE
and choose the 'Deactivate' button. In addition, to completely
clean your system, you should delete the FMSTEPUP.INI file from your
WINDOWS directory.
On the other hand, if you want to give the program a longer trial
and wish to install it onto your hard disk or network drive, choose
the 'Install' button when SETUP.EXE prompts you. Please see the
next section for more information.
2.1.2. Installing on a hard disk or network drive
-------------------------------------------------
If you've already copied all files from the FM StepUp package onto
your hard disk (for instance, you have extracted the files from an
archive), run SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Activate' button.
If you don't have the FM StepUp files on the hard disk, choose
'Install' instead. Then enter the path to the directory where you
want FM StepUp to be installed. In this case, SETUP.EXE will copy
all the files to the new location and then activate them. In
addition, you'll be prompted to create a separate program group for
FM StepUp. It isn't essential to have such a group, but it may be
convenient. In any case, it's your decision!
2.1.3. Uninstalling FM StepUp
-----------------------------
To prevent File Manager from loading and using FM StepUp, run
SETUP.EXE and choose the 'Deactivate' button. If you decide to
start using FM StepUp later on, run SETUP.EXE and choose 'Activate'.
Otherwise, to completely remove FM StepUp from your system,
deactivate it with the SETUP.EXE utility (see above) and remove all
the files from the directory on your hard disk or network drive
where you have installed FM StepUp. In addition, erase file
FMSTEPUP.INI from your WINDOWS directory and, if you created it
during installation, delete the 'FMStepUp' program group from the
Program Manager.
2.2. Registering your copy of FM StepUp
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sometimes, FM StepUp displays a registration reminder, and the
'About FM StepUp' screen reads 'Unregistered copy.' If you have
registered FM StepUp and obtained your personal Registration Code
from us, you may use it to remove the registration reminder from the
screen and enter your name in the 'About FM StepUp' screen. Choose
'Register' from the StepUp menu of File Manager and, when the dialog
box pops up, enter your name (exactly as it appears in your
Registration Acknowledgment) and the Registration Code.
Be sure to enter your name EXACTLY as it's written in the
Registration Acknowledgment, including all letters in proper case
(upper or lower), spaces, punctuation, etc. If you wish your name
to be spelled differently, please let us know and we'll assign you a
new registration number.
2.3. Manual installation/deinstallation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If the automatic installation fails for any reason, you may install
FM StepUp manually:
1. Create a directory for FM StepUp on your hard disk, say
C:\FMSTEPUP, and copy all the files from the FM StepUp
installation disk into that directory. If you obtained the FM
StepUp files compressed in an archive, extract all the files
from it.
2. Close File Manager.
3. Open file WINFILE.INI for editing (using Notepad or any other
ASCII text editor). This file is located in the WINDOWS
directory on your hard disk (or the directory you specified when
installing Windows). Please note: The file you need is
WINFILE.INI, not the WIN.INI file!
Find the section [AddOns] in this file and enter the following
line right after the string [AddOns]:
FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
(or specify the directory you copied FM StepUp's files into,
if other than FMSTEPUP).
The resulting portion of the WINFILE.INI should look like
this:
...
[AddOns]
FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
...
(... means other lines of the file). Save the file.
5. Run File Manager.
If the installation has been completed successfully, you should see
a new menu item, 'StepUp,' among the other items in the main menu of
the File Manager. If you don't see the 'StepUp' entry in the main
menu of File Manager, an error has occurred. Please verify that you
have done all the steps above and, in particular, you specified the
correct path in the [AddOns] section of the WINFILE.INI file. Also,
make sure that the files have not been corrupted when they were
copied onto your hard disk. (Each file should be the same size as
each file on the installation diskette)
To manually uninstall FM StepUp:
1. Close File Manager and remove the line 'FM StepUp=...' from the
WINFILE.INI file (using Notepad, for example). After that, when
you restart File Manager, FM StepUp will not be loaded. If you
decide later to start using FM StepUp again, enter the line
'FMStepUp=...' specifying the complete DOS path to FMSTEPUP.DLL
file, in the [AddOn] section of the WINFILE.INI file.
The following steps should be completed only if you wish to remove
FM StepUp from your system permanently:
2. Delete all the files from the directory on your hard disk where
you installed FM StepUp;
3. Delete file FMSTEPUP.INI from the WINDOWS directory;
4. Delete program group 'FMStepUp' in the Program manager window,
if there is one.
We hope you'll change your mind!
2.3. A note about [Restrictions] for File Manager
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you're a System Administrator, you may find that FM StepUp gives
too much power to Windows users. That's why we made FM StepUp able
to restrict itself. With FM StepUp, you may also restrict a user's
access to some of the features of the File Manager in the same way
as Program Manager.
NOTE: FM StepUp is not intended to provide a comprehensive set of
[Restrictions] for File Manager. A separate utility, 'FM Guard,'
specifically designed for this purpose, is available from
ChaoSoft. 'FM Guard' allows you to disable any command in File
Manager, limit user access to any drive of your choice, prevent
closing of File Manager, etc. For more information about 'FM
Guard,' please contact us at the address at the end of this file.
To restrict FM StepUp, create a file, 'FMSTEPUP.SYS' in the
WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, insert a [Restrictions] section in the
file and add desired Boolean entries listed below to it.
Standard rules for specifying BOOLEAN entries of the WIN.INI
and SYSTEM.INI files apply here: 1/ON/TRUE/YES may be used
interchangeably to turn the mode on; 0/OFF/FALSE/NO - to turn
it off.
Note: the settings that affect standard dialog boxes (By File
Type, Properties, Run, etc.) of File Manager require
corresponding dialog boxes to be enabled through the
'Preferences | Dialogs' command.
NoShowHiddenSysFiles=BOOLEAN
disables the Show Hidden/System Files check box in the By File
Type dialog box so that users will be unable to see any files
you don't want them to;
NoChangeFileAttrib=BOOLEAN
disables the Attributes group of the Properties dialog box and
prevents users from changing attributes of files, so that all
the files made hidden by you will remain hidden;
NoChangeFileDateTime=BOOLEAN
disables OK button in the Change Date/Time dialog and prevents
users from modifying these file attributes;
NoUninstallStepUp=BOOLEAN
prevents users from uninstalling FM StepUp, i.e. if a user
modifies the WINFILE.INI and removes the 'FM StepUp=' entry, this
entry will be added again by FM StepUp automatically when
exiting File Manager and FM StepUp will be loaded during the
next run of File Manager.
NoSaveStepUpSettings=BOOLEAN
prevents users from saving the current settings of FM StepUp
on exit or on choosing File | Exit while the holding SHIFT key
down (undocumented 'Save Settings Now' command);
NoCustomizeExecMenu=BOOLEAN
prevents users from customizing the Execute Menu of FM StepUp;
NoDialogs=BOOLEAN
prevents users from using the Preferences | Dialogs command;
NoCustomizeQuickMenu=BOOLEAN
prevents users from customizing the Quick Menu of FM StepUp;
NoChangeViewerEditor=BOOLEAN
prevents users from changing the default viewer and editor
through the Preferences dialog box (so they won't be able to
run undesirable programs this way!);
NoRunDOSprog=BOOLEAN
disables 'OK' button in the Run DOS Program dialog box and
prevents users from using this command.
NoExitWindows=BOOLEAN
prevents users from using commands Return To DOS, Restart
Windows, and Reboot System from StepUp|Special menu. This
does not prevent, though, from exiting Windows by other means,
via closing Program Manager, for instance.
NoRunScreenSaver=BOOLEAN
disables command StepUp | Special | Run Screen Saver.
